About Department of Statistics

 

The Department of Statistics was established in 1964 as a part of Mathematics Department, and since 1974 it is an independent Department.

The Department of Statistics at Panjab University has an excellent infrastructure for the teaching and research activities at M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. levels. The courses are designed to develop a class of analytic and inferential aptitude among the students through rigorous practical assignments along with exposure to industries. This Department is a "Department of Special Assistance" (DSA) under the Special Assistance Programme (SAP) of the UGC for the last 20 years based on its excellence in teaching and research. The Department was also under COSIST and FIST scheme of UGC and DST respectively.

The computer laboratory of the Department is fully equipped with nearly 40 computers. The students are trained on various statistical packages like SPSS, SYSTAT, MINITAB, STATGRAPHICS, R, S-PLUS, SHAZAM, BMDP, MATHEMATICA and SAS.

The Department is also involved in research and teaching statistics to sister Departments and neighboring institutes of National importance like PGIMER, GMCH, TTTI, IMTECH, NIPER etc.

The thrust areas of the Department include:

  1. Multiple Comparison Procedures
  2. Reliability and Survival Analysis
  3. Applied Statistics
  4. Bio-Statistics
  5. Econometrics
